Uma Thurman was born in Boston, Massachusetts. She was named after a Hindu deity and means "bestower of blessings". She has described herself as an awkward child who was teased for her peculiar name and for being ugly and weird. At 15, Uma was spotted by two New York talent scouts in a production of The Crucible. Uma caught the acting bug and knew this was what she wanted to do with her life. She left school to move to New York City and become an actress.
In New York Uma Thurman worked as a dish washer and a model to pay her bills. At 16, she landed her first role as a vampire who seduces men to rob them-in the thriller Kiss Daddy Good Night (1987). In 1994 Quentin Tarantino convinced Uma to play Mia Wallace in his film Pulp Fiction. In one scene Uma is dancing with John Travolta.
Uma Thurman was married to actor Gary Oldman, from 1990 to 1991. After that she married actor Ethan Hawke. The couple married May 1, 1998 and together they have a daughter; Maya Ray, born July 8, 1998, and a son; Roan, born January 15, 2002. After taking a year off with her pregnancy, Uma has shown renewed vigor in her acting career, starring in many films including Quentin Tarantinos Kill Bill vol 1 and 2 (2003 and 2004), co-starring Lucy Liu and Daryl Hannah. Uma and Ethan separated on July 20, 2004. Reportedly because of Hawke's romance with 22-year-old Canadian model Jen Perzow.
In 2005 Uma Thurman once again danced away with actor John Travolta (they danced together in Pulp Fiction). This time in the movie Be Cool.
