Tia Carrere was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, and is a mix of Hawaiian, Chinese, Spanish, and Filipino. Her sister had difficulty pronouncing Althea's name, now with an easier name, Tia. She also changed her last name to Carrera, apparently as a tribute to the actress Barbara Carrera. At 11, Tia was taking singing lessons to fulfill her dreams of becoming a singer. But then she was discovered by the parents of a film producer, while in a grocery store, who thought she'd be perfect for their son's film, titlrd Aloha Summer. Tia Carrere moved to Los Angeles to take her new acting career further. She appeared in TV shows such as The A-Team and MacGyver. But her big hit came in 1985 when she was casted in the role of nurse Jade Soong Chung, in the daytime soap, General Hospital.
Tia Carrere appeared in Tour of Duty, Anything But Love, Friday the 13th, and Quantum Leap. In 1991 Tia starred in Showdown in Little Tokyo (where she had a body double appear nude for her) and in Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man. She is also got a role as Wayne's dream girl, aspiring rock star Cassandra, in Wayne's World in 1992, co-starred with Mike Myers and Dana Carvey. She contributed several songs to the movies soundtrack. Tia can be seen as Sydney Fox in the TV series Relic Hunter Tia Carrere married British photojournalist Simon Wakelin on December 31, 2002. In 2005, she starred in the movie Back in the Day, co-starring Tatyana Ali. Tia gave birth to a baby girl, named Bianca, on September 5, 2005. |
