As a child, Hilary swam in the Junior Olympics and state championships, and ranked fifth in her state for gymnastics. Hilary moved to Los Angeles with her divorced mother, at the age of 16. Hilary and her mother sometimes slept in the car while Hilary went to South Pasadena High School.
Hilary's first notable film was as the sidekick in Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992). Two years later, she stared in The Next Karate Kid, a critical and box-office failure. She appeared in a number of minor films and gained recognition on the TV show; Beverly Hills, 90210, as Steve's (Ian Ziering) girlfriend Carly. In 1999, stared in the independent drama, Boys Don't Cry. The film is based on the story of Teena Brandon, a woman whose decision to lead her life as a man met with dire consequences.
